Case Study: Monkey Puzzle
“Ros has helped our business grow more than we ever imagined. She’s also saved us time, money and our sanity!”
Karen Meager - Co-founder, Monkey Puzzle
The client
Monkey Puzzle specialise in coaching, training and personal development for leaders and teams. By developing exceptional people, they in turn help create organisations better able to achieve results - giving leaders more time to do what they do best. They wanted to create the same advantage when it came to their marketing. Investing in external support and guidance to free up their own time has allowed them to spend more time doing what they do best.
Ros met co-founder Karen Meager at an event run by Watertight Marketing and went on to coach them through their 12-month Masterplan programme. A close working relationship developed, leading Karen and her business partner John McLachlan to ask Ros to work with them on an on-going basis. Having put the marketing fundamentals in place, Karen and John now wanted to address a number of strategic issues.

The challenge
A common challenge for many businesses is how to describe what they do in a way that is meaningful to potential clients. Monkey’ Puzzle’s existing clients knew the benefits they provided, but the company struggled to convey that to a new audience who were unfamiliar with how they worked. Their customer testimonials sounded sensational and ‘too good to be true’ and Monkey Puzzle struggled to find a clear message.
Developing messaging takes time and reflection to get it right. That’s another challenge to a small business. Monkey Puzzle needed to take time out of their business to get necessary perspective to find that clarity, whilst adding marketing momentum.

The solution
Ros helped Monkey Puzzle to get specific about the benefits their clients experience. Their clients said that they were happier in their jobs and relationships, but the real benefits from Monkey Puzzle’s training was that it that helped them change unwanted habits and behaviours and communicate better with people they may have had issues with in the past. These specific benefits were much more compelling to prospective customers.
Once the messaging was clearer, Ros took Monkey Puzzle through a ‘Slow Down to Speed Up’ session once a quarter. The sessions helped them to review their marketing activities and strategy, streamline their marketing processes, spend less time on admin and set their priorities for the next quarter. Over the course of a year they did further work on their ideal customer, proposition, buyer journey and messaging.
When Monkey Puzzle decided they needed to outsource more of their marketing implementation, Ros began working for them a couple of days per month to make all their marketing activities happen. When they wanted to take the business in a new strategic direction, with more focus on organisations and teams, Ros supported them through the transition, helping them work out what needed to change in their marketing and in what order things needed to be done, project managing the whole process.

The results
Since embedding these marketing processes and clarity of thinking in the business, Monkey Puzzle have seen a significant increase in their business. Their marketing continues to attract the type of work they want to do and that they are best suited for.
As Ros explains, a small amount of regular input can get a lot done. “I’ve been working 1-2 days a month implementing the Monkey Puzzle marketing strategy and being their outsourced Marketing Director. The goal of 2018 was to streamline their business and marketing/sales processes, which we've done. Karen and John now spend much less time on their marketing and admin so they can now focus on delivering client work.”
And as for Monkey Puzzle themselves, co-founder Karen Meager had this to say about working with Ros… “Ros has helped our business grow more than we ever imagined. She helps us to think differently about our marketing approaches, evaluate decisions properly and has put together a plan that not only delivers results but also saves us money by preventing us from making expensive misjudgements around marketing.”
And, does Karen have any advice for a firm considering working with a marketing consultant? “At first we weren't sure what we'd get out of using a marketing consultant as we both have marketing backgrounds but Ros has saved us time, money and our sanity!”
